Xiaomi Announces Redmi 2 Prime with 2GB RAM and 16GB Storage Priced at Rs 6,999

As expected, Xiaomi has unveiled its ‘Made in India’ handset, the Redmi 2 Prime, for a price of Rs. 6,999. The device has been manufactured at Xiaomi’s unit in Vishakhapatnam, and was announced at an event today, by the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu. The Redmi 2 Prime can be purchased at a price tag of Rs. 5,999 through Xiaomi’s online retail store, Mi.com, and can also be bought via other partners such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Amazon.

The Redmi 2 Prime is cosmetically identical to the Redmi 2 and as a matter of fact, it is sporting the exact same innards except for the bumped up 2GB RAM. The phone also comes with larger internal storage at 16GB and you can also expand it via micro SD card. This is the first time, the company is making the device in India ever since it launched it’s operation last year.

As per the listing, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime offers double the internal storage and RAM than the regular Redmi 2 (review), and appears to be the same as the enhanced version of the device that was announced earlier. Apart from these two significant improvements, the other specs remain the same. It comes with the same 4.7-inch 720p IPS display protected by Asahi DragonTrail glass, 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor with dual-SIM 4G LTE support on both Indian bands of 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage expandable upto 32GB via microSD card slot. It has a 8MP front and 2MP rear camera as well alongwith a 2200 mAh battery to keep things going.

Redmi 2 allows you to create custom SIM labels so you don’t get mixed up. It also automatically selects which SIM to use when you call or text someone based on history. As per Xiaomi, Redmi 2 Prime’s dispaly is protected with a highly shatter and scratch-resistant AGC Dragontrail glass that is known for being incredibly strong despite being very thin and light. Redmi 2 Prime uses two noise-cancelling silicon microphones for better signal-to-noise ratio than traditional ECM microphones. Prior to the official launch, Redmi 2 Prime (Grey) Smartphone was first listed at Amazon India site with all technical specifications.

It also features an 8-megapixel camera at the back with LED flash, 2-megapixel selfie camera up front, and a 2,200mAh battery that the company claims is good enough for 14 hours of talktime. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, and on the software front, it runs on MIUI 6 based on Android KitKat.

What about availability in other regions? Well, Xiaomi didn’t really elaborate on that, but we’re almost certain that this device will hit China sooner or later, and other Asian regions might follow soon after, and same can be said about Brazil where Xiaomi started selling their devices quite recently. There you have it, the Redmi 2 Prime is not official, we’ll report back if any additional info pops up.

The company has confirmed that the new Redmi 2 Prime will be available in grey and white colour variants at its official e-Store Mi.com/in on Monday onwards.
