Moto X Play with 5.5 inch Full HD Display and 3,630mAh Battery Announced

Motorola has outed today the third-gen Moto G and Moto X Style today and it also unveiled the new Moto X Play handset to complete its trio launch. The Lenovo-owned company has placed the new Moto G as its most affordable device and the Moto X Style as its flagship, so it made sense for the new Moto X Play to be in the middle.

One of the standout feature of Moto X Play is the massive 3,630mAh battery. Motorola says that the phone will be able to stand 48 hours on single charge. In addition there's turbocharged recharging, said to be up to 50 per cent faster than the super-fast recharge time of the Samsung Galaxy S6. The device is also water resistant.

The Moto X Style features a 5.7-inch QuadHD display offering a 515ppi pixel density. The phone houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC with a 1.8GHz hexa-core processor paired with 3GB of RAM. The device Android 5.1.1 and it will come with Motorola’s software features such as  Moto Assist, Moto Display, Moto Voice and more. Also, during the Moto Play demo, Motorola has also introduced a new feature called Motorola Assist which allows users to communicate with the device through audio messages and voice commands.

The best news? A micro SD card, at last, to go with either 16 or 32GB of onboard storage. The Moto X didn't have one last year, and Motorola/Lenovo's finally come to its senses.

But the smartphone also comes with a 21-megapixel rear camera (paired with a 5 megapixel front one), which could be another feature that will make consumers interested or at least curious in this device. The video capture mode of the the Moto X Play is limited to full HD mode and its front camera won’t get a dedicate flash unit. This is actually the same camera that the company has used in the Moto X style.

The Moto X Play will be available in 55 countries starting in August, a month ahead of the step-up Moto X Style. But there aren't any current plans for the X Play to be released in the U.S.: instead, Motorola chose to emphasize the Moto X Style and Pure Edition, coming in September. But for global markets, the X Play could be a really nice step-up alternative to the Moto G.

As with the 2014 Moto X, these new phone will feature a minimum of added software that the company says has been designed enhance user experience. Other than this, however, they mostly run stock Android. And like past Moto X models, you’ll be able to customize both new Moto X model using the Moto Maker feature that will give you a wide variety of options for colors, rear casing materials and engravings.

As expected, the Moto X Play can be customized via Moto Maker. Motorola will also keep the price lower than many flagships, pricing the handset at a respectable £299 ($467) in the UK. And there's the kicker: while Motorola has confirmed the Moto X Play will be available across Europe, Latin America, and Canada, US customers won't be able to buy it when it goes on general sale in August.

Sounds great, if it's reasonably priced. More to come when we get some hands-on time.
