If you live in India and a very active internet user, you may sometimes get frustrated due to ridiculous capping rules, low speed and poor customer care. Those days may soon become history as recent reports are coming out that Google is planning to start Google Fiber in India, which offers speed upto 1Gbps, and Google may introduce the Google Fiber in India in 2015. For now, talks are going on between Google Fibre Team and the IT Ministry . An IT Ministry official spoke to Business Line and said, “We are keen to partner a company like Google in furthering the Digital India plan. Modalities have to be worked out,”. So, now you can imagine downloading a HD movie in 33 seconds flat; uploading 100 images in 5 seconds. Check out the video below to see how Google Fiber works.

Google Fiber is the new name of Internet Renaissance. Where the average peak connection speed of the world is about 13.5Mbps, Google Fiber promises connection at a staggering 1Gbps by using Fiber Optics technology. But the innovation does not end here! With this eye-popping speedy connection, Google aims to redefine the TV viewing as well by integrating TV & High-speed internet. When the world thought with the invention of 3G & 4G, internet speed has reached its epitome, Google Fiber enters the market of ISP with a bang. This not only increases the competition, but takes the online experience to a whole new level. When the world is gripped by inflation, Google Fiber is not only coming cheap but also promising to provide free internet service for at least 7 years!
How it is different?
With a speed of 1000 Mbps per second, any movie can be downloaded in just about 30 seconds, thus no more buffering, no waiting and loads of fun with instant video chatting. The internet with television plan comes with DVR which allows you to store 8 live programs simultaneously along with never ending 2 terabytes of storage along with 1 terabytes space in Google drive to save loads of files and 200 channels with crystal clear HD technology-all at one place alone. It will also be providing with free wi-fi at 802.11a/b/g/n speed including 3×3 MIMO antennas and dual concurrent radios.
Installation
Installation charges will be 300$ and one time payment which includes a network box for home and one mile fiber cost which will run from street to home. Google fiber works on fibers running directly to your home and at the end of it will be a network box. So the only requirement for installation is the Network Box – The modem/router with built-in firewall and WiFi. Simple is’nt it? It is not just internet, there is something more than that. Google will also offer Fiber TV, a television service which mainly requires V Box ( A set-top box needed for each television) and Storage Box (Local storage and DVR, can record up to 8 shows at once, access as a wireless access point).
The Google Playbook
The heart of Google's strategy is simple: Find communities that really see the value in an ultra high-speed broadband network. While this may sound rather elementary, in the past companies deploying capital intensive infrastructure such as these fiber networks, almost had to guess where demand for their services would be.
But Google has changed the way new entrants address markets. The company doesn't just research consumer demand, it actually asks city governments and citizens themselves to commit to the network as a condition of its construction. The second major piece of Google's strategy is to forgo offering several different tiers of service. Instead it offers a single tier of service: 1Gbps downloads. And the company offers this service at the affordable price of $70 a month with increased pricing for adding TV service.
The Problems
- As of now, Google Fiber in India certainly sounds like a fantasy as there are several practical problems involved. The biggest and the most visible problem in licenses.
- In India, any ISP who wishes to provide broadband services needs to get licenses which are auctioned, and the price may shoot upto thousands of crores of rupees.
- As per the recent talks which are happening between Google team and IT Ministry, it seems that the requirement of licenses may hold greater importance. One alternative can be that Google partners with an existing ISP such as BSNL and start the services.
- If the Government allows Google to roll out Google Fiber without licenses, it can be a major boost to Internet connectivity and Digital Business for all Indians.
We hope for the best!
