Apple Expected to Release New iPads on Oct. 16

According to a new report from Recode, Apple plans to hold an event October 16 to introduce its newest iPads and Macs. The site said the launch will be "a more laid-back affair" compared with the iPhone launch in September. Recode correctly reported the date for that earlier event.

The iPhone maker is expected to unveil the new iPads and the latest updates to its iMac line, the website said, citing an article published by technology website 9to5Mac earlier this week.

The new iPad will have a faster processor, most likely Apple A8 found in the iPhone 6. Or it may have something like A8X, which will be even more powerful than the A8. But currently, not many details are available about what Apple will unveil on October 16. The iPad sales are falling and growth in slowing so this year Apple may go in for than evolutionary changes to its tablet in a bid to woo buyers.

Apple's next-generation iPad Air and iPad Retina mini are both expected to come with updated processors and support for Touch ID, the fingerprint first sensor introduced with the iPhone 5s. The iPad Air may also come in a gold color variation, and it may include a new anti-reflective laminated display.

The Retina iMac, which may come with a "5K" resolution of 5120 x 2880, may be available only in 27-inches and it may also feature AMD graphics. It is expected to use a Haswell processor, as next-generation Broadwell processors for the iMac won't be available until 2015.

Apple Pay could also get new attention at the Oct. 16 event, as well as an updated iPad Mini. One new product that likely won't get much attention is the rumored larger 12.9-inch iPad, which is apparently being delayed until 2015 due to the success of the iPhone 6 models, which have factories still turning out more and more smartphones to meet the demand, according to a recent eWEEK story. The bigger iPads were originally slated to be built in large quantities starting in December, but the plans have now been delayed.

The new iPhones, which were released starting Sept. 19, have been a huge hit, selling more than 10 million units in their first weekend on the market, according to a previous eWEEK story. That sales mark gave the iPhone 6 models a new all-time record for first-weekend iPhone sales since iPhones first hit the market back in June of 2007.

As for OS X Yosemite, development on the software is nearing completion and a golden master candidate was seeded to developers earlier this week.

The bad update certainly hasn't been the only Apple issue on the minds of owners of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones recently. Some iPhone 6 owners around the world initially reported that their thinner iPhone 6 phones were bending when they were kept in a pants pocket.

The bending issues were widely circulated online along with graphic photographs that purported to show iPhone 6 phones with mild or more severe bending.

Apple is also rumored to be working on an update to its Apple TV set-top box, potentially with new input methods and support for downloadable third-party applications. But the latest claims suggest Apple remains held up by talks with cable companies and content owners, suggesting that such negotiations could push the launch of a hardware refresh back to 2015.
