Just yesterday we reviewed Context Menu, a Chrome extension that gave you access to your bookmarks from the Omnibar and the right-click context menu. That was for bookmarks i.e. links you want to save for future reference. The thing is, a lot of people also bookmark pages they want to read later and while they may read them later, they don’t necessarily end up cleaning their bookmarks. What’s needed is perhaps a better way to save content you intend to read, make sure you see it often enough to be reminded it’s something you have to do, and it should look good. Meet DashNotes; a Chrome extension that lets you pin text, images, and links to the new tab page from the context menu. It also revamps the new tab page so that you get a beautiful new background each time you open it.

DashNotes is pretty simple to operate. As soon you’ve installed the extension on Google Chrome, you’ll notice that the new tab page has been changed and replaced by a wallpaper (which changes everytime you refresh or open new tab page again).
How to pin text, images and pages to the new tab page in Chrome
- On your Chrome web browser, go to the Web Store then download and install the extension called “DashNotes”.
- Once installed, open a normal window or new tab. Keep in mind that this tool won’t work if you are opening a new tab page via Incognito.
- As you can see, your browser’s new tab page has been automatically transformed into a digital pin board. Just like any regular pin board, you can pin various contents on it such as text, images and links to your favorite sites and blogs.
- To pin a text, just highlight the text that you wish to pin and then right-click on it. The context menu will appear. Just select the option for “Add Text to DashNotes”.
- To pin an image or photo, just right-click on the photo that you wish to pin then select the “Add Image to DashNotes” option from the context menu.
- To pin a page, just click on any empty area within the page then select the “Add Page to DashNotes” option from the context menu.
- To see all of your pinned content, just open a new tab. All of your pinned content will be displayed on it. You’ll also get a randomly generated image as background every time you open your pin board.
All your notes, links to pages, images and videos will get neatly pinned to your new tab page, so the next time you open a new tab, you will find all your little bits of notes neatly pinned up on the dashboard. As far as videos are concerned, you can play them right within your pinboard and don’t have to navigate away from the screen. You can also add your own notes and reminders by hitting the + icon at the top right corner of your screen. Deleting is just as easy. Just hit the x button at the corner of your pins to delete them.
DashNotes is a simple concept that is beautifully executed. It has attractive background scenes that alternate every time you open a new tab. It is light and it pins your notes and extras neatly making it so much more intuitive to put together ideas when you are working on a project.
There are already plenty of apps and extensions to supercharge the New Tab page, but DashNotes is a winner. It makes saving parts of the web fast and easy, and you don't forget them in your vaults; it's in your face every time you open a new tab, which is probably often.
